Text Box: Rhodes House is part of Oxford University and was opened in 1929. It was built by Sir Edward Herbert who collaborated with Sir Edwin Lutyens on several monumental projects in India and South Africa. The building in South Parks Rd outwardly is visually bland and derivative and the inside has a hushed, monastic feel to it. It houses a wonderful library which is a feast for anyone with hunger for information on colonial history. The eagle of Zimbabwe tops the building but otherwise there is little either within or outside of the building which indicates the strong historical link with Africa. It was a great privilege when Pula was invited to supply various items to decorate the dining areas for the annual Rhodes Scholar summer ball and several wall hangings were supplied to adorn the high walls

Text Box: These two stunning wall hangings have been retained by Rhodes house and make a wonderful setting for the oil painting of Rhodes which they straddle. Rhodes himself would have instantly recognised the motifs on the wall hangings which were designed and made in Bulawayo—a very short distance from Rhodes’ grave in Motopus, southern Zimbabwe.
